Doug Collins? Paxson, you took this long to pick Doug Collins?

The sports media outlets are reporting that the Bulls are set on picking Doug Collins as their next coach. Yes, this is the same Doug Collins that couldn't lead a MJ Bulls team to a championship, but somehow will get a Hinrich led Bulls team to a championship. Great, sign me up for those season tickets.

Its not that I think Doug Collins is a terrible coach. In fact, he is probably better than average. But to make a comparison, an average NBA coach is similar to the coaching skills of Art Shell or Jim Mora. Paxson selecting Doug Collins leads to two plausible conclusions: (1) Doug Collins fits Paxson's basketball theory better than all available candidates or (2) the other available candidates couldn't coach a trained dog to lie down. The answer is likely somewhere between the two. So after months of a coaching search that seemed to include interviews of 20+ candidates, we are back to Doug Collins. Seriously, there is no one better than Doug Collins out there?

What bothers me the most is that Paxson has allegedly been looking for a coach that he will get a long with. HEre's a thought, how about you get a coach that your players can get a long with. Isn't this the same Doug Collins whose Wizards players quit on him in Washington? And this occured when Doug Collins had the best player to ever play, MJ, as a staunch supporter.
So somehow, Doug Collins is going to get Tyrus Thomas and Larry Hughes to "want to play hard for him". I just don't see it.

Here's to hoping I am wrong.

Why I Chose to blog

I choose to blog because:

1) I am sick of reading Jay Mariotti (and most chicago sports writers). When I was younger (and dumber), I used to like Jay Mariotti. However, after reading his 4th article I soon realized that every article he wrote was the same. Jerry Reinsdorf is bad. Ozzie is bad. The McCaskey's are bad. Blah, Blah, Blah. If you've read one of Jay "one article" Mariotti's articles you have read them all. And this doesn't mean to just single out Jay Mariotti. Honestly, is there one chicago sports writer that you wake up every morning wanting to read? I think not. Sports journalists write because they have to write. Its their job. Unfortunately, for the reader and like most workers, people hate their jobs. I always get the sense that these sports journalists write as if they loathe their job.

2). While I am at it Chicago sports sections are terrible. They provide namely two things (1) a recap of events that I have already watched or read about or (2) useless information that adds no value. I rarely ever read a sports column from the tribune or sun-times that offers unique insight about a player, a coaching strategy, or anything of significance. Great Businesses are profitable because they add value to the consumer. Chicago sports sections don't add value. They are the quintessential "thanks, reading that just made be dumber" events of my life.

3). I love chicago sports. I don't like the Yankee's, the Red Sox, the Lakers or America's team. In fact, I hate the concept of the "America's team". When did the Cowboy's become America's team. And why wasn't I part of the America's team survey? There is only one team I care about, the Chicago sport's team I am rooting for.

4). I think to love a team also means you got to hate a team. I mean some serious hating. When Kirk Hinrich can't hit an open shot, I am going to explode with some serious fan mongering. Honestly, if you are a point guard in the NBA, you've got to hit open shots. Sorry... Back to the issue. The best thing that a sports blogger can offer that a journalist cannot is some serious, "what the %$@* did he just do" opinions on bad chicago sports teams, players, coaches and management.

5). I also want to spit some logic. Good players should also get their equal praise. This isn't an all out hater's forum. This blog will offer sound opinions on what ails our sports teams and what makes them great. For instance, there are a lot of Cedric Benson haters out there. I get it and agree CB isn't and will probably never be a great RB. But, I can argue that CB is failing more so b/c the Bears have a terrible offensive line than CB being a bad football player. See some sound gray area logic.

6). I wanted there to be a place where some rational minded, smart, and passionate sports fans could share their views on their favorite teams without the taint of newspaper bias. To me, there really isn't a place to find such information. The sports journalists write with the passion of a bowling ball and the mainstream blogs broadcast as if they are TMZ. ChiCity Sports Fanion is neither. Its a place for rational opinions on Chicago sports teams and current sports issues.

7). Besides sports teams, coaches and management, I also want to blog about sports related items. For instance, in case you haven't figured it out, I will write columns on why Peter King or Jay "One article" Mariotti make my blood boil. Or why I don't like Bears fans who bought the orange jersey. Or why going to a Bulls game is more like watching the Disney channel than watching a basketball game. Seriously, enough with the mind numbing music, lights, and fireworks. It won't make the Bulls a better team. But.... just once could you throw the white t-shirt my way.

8). I need something else to do rather than doing some to work.

9). Writing can be therapeutic. For instance, I am still not over the bad foul call on Scottie Pippen in the Playoffs against the Knicks. And, I still can't get over the Bears losing the Super Bowl, even knowing beforehand that they weren't a Superbowl team. See, Ahhh I feel better already.

10). I can't wait for the day I can write a blog celebrating a Bulls, Bears or other Chicago Sports teams' Championship.
